The internet has put in a position where we have a plethora of information right at our finger tips, you might find yourself googling, asking in Facebook groups or plugging new language or abbreviations into the search bar on Instagram on infant sleep 4-month sleep regression, my babies having a false start, STTN, DWT, how to get my baby to sleep past 5am and so on. However, this overload of information can also result in more confusion.

Below are some generic tips to help you and your baby get a better night sleep

Pay attention to how your baby falls to sleep: in the beginning, it’s easy to create a routine that involves you ‘putting your baby to sleep’. The goal when you are ready is to be able to put them to bed in a safe sleep environment awake.

Sucking props: even though your baby may go down awake into their crib and put themselves to sleep, if they are sucking on a soother or sucking on a bottle, this is still considered a sleep prop and can cause issues later on with learning to link sleep cycles together.

Sleeping environment: the ideal room temperature is between 17-21 degrees and in this temperature your baby may still have cold hands or feet, these their little digits are not a good indicator of their core body temperature, instead feel the back of their neck. Small babies have immature circulation systems, so their hands and feet will warm up over time but in the beginning, don’t assume that this is the reason they are not sleeping well.

White noise: this can be a great addition if you live on a noisy street, have a dog that barks or have a babies bedroom close to alot of activity, as it can help drown out sudden noises which may startle a new baby.

Routine: A good routine and sleep go hand in hand. To have a more stable bedtime you have to have a stable wake up time and stable cut off from nap-time.

Sleeping through the night: Parents have different definitions of what sleep through the night means, the first part of the night is deep sleep and it takes care of itself, the midnight to 5am stretch is more active, so this is where you tend to find you get the clustered wakings.

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/how-to-take-cute-pictures-of-baby 2017-07-02T21:00:00-07:00 2020-06-15T03:24:10-07:00 How to Take Cute Pictures of Baby Carrie Shan All moms love taking pictures of their baby throughout the day to document those special moments. Having camera phones makes it so easy to snap a photo right away so you don’t miss capturing baby’s first smile! So how do you use your phone to take a professional quality baby picture? It’s not always easy but there are several tips you can practice to get the perfect snapshot for your baby’s memory book or DIY baby’s first photoshoot without spending money on a photographer. Here’s how:

1. Wardrobe

Sometimes the key to getting a professional looking photo is simply dressing your baby in a beautiful outfit. A simple onesie is cute for your everyday photo, but for a special photoshoot you’ll want to dress baby in something with an eye-catching design and bright colors. An important thing to consider is making sure that whatever outfit you choose is super comfy – dressing baby in a stiff suit or starchy dress will not guarantee a quality photo. Try baby apparel made from bamboo fabric that is silky soft to the touch – like emeraldsholidays!

2. Timing

Timing is another important element to getting a great photo. The easiest thing to do is take a sleeping baby picture because you can pose baby however you like! But if you prefer baby to be awake for the photo, try to plan the photo session after baby takes a nap so she will be well-rested and in a happy mood.

3. Use props

Professional photographers typically bring props to a photoshoot to add an interesting element to the pictures. You can even try creating a makeshift backdrop or just hang up a plain white sheet and then have baby in a colorful outfit. Including toys as part of the picture is also very helpful because it will keep baby entertained and smiling, especially if you or someone else can hold a toy next to the camera to get baby to look straight at the camera.

4. Posing

Since small babies cannot move much on their own, they can’t do a ton of poses just yet. Having baby sitting or lying on a blanket is a great start. You can take some shots of baby tummy down first and then have baby lie on her back and see if you can get a shot of her reaching for her toes. If your baby is older and has started to imitate you, try making some funny faces, sticking out your tongue, or playing peek-a-boo and see if your baby will play along!

5. Lighting

Good lighting can make a huge difference in your photo quality. If the weather is nice, aim for an outdoor photoshoot with lots of natural lighting. If the photoshoot is indoors, try to bring around some extra lamps for more lighting, but nothing too bright that will bother the baby. You also want to avoid using the flash on your camera which can scare your baby and hurt her eyes.

6. Get up close

You don’t want to get a picture that is too far away or you will lose the details. Get close and stoop down to baby’s level or lie on the ground for an eye-level shot. You’ll also have a better chance at getting a picture where baby looks straight at the camera. Don’t be afraid to try a bunch of different angles, even if you end up looking silly.

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/dealing-with-the-terrible-twos 2017-05-04T17:43:00-07:00 2020-06-11T08:09:15-07:00 Dealing with the Terrible Twos Carrie Shan Ever been shopping at the mall or grocery store and the next thing you know, your toddler is having a meltdown in the middle of the store? Welcome to the “terrible twos”, the stage in your toddler’s life where their emotions get the best of them and they will have a tantrum for the most insignificant reason. It’s just a phase that will inevitably pass but in the midst of it you’ll be ready to pull out your hair! In the meantime, don’t fret and take this time to learn tools for handling your child’s behavior so you know what to do with kid #2.

Stick to set nap times

We all get a little cranky when we’re tired, so try your best to make sure your child always takes a regularly scheduled nap and avoid going out during nap times. If your child gets woken up too early from their nap or you wait too long to put them down, this can definitely trigger a big tantrum.

Keep calm

It’s always best to maintain your composure and not give in to your child’s demands. When your child sees that you are not giving in by raising your voice or threatening to punish her but instead ignoring her behavior, she will eventually calm down and you won’t be reinforcing her bad behavior.

Teach him how to express his emotions

Sometimes part of the problem is that your child just doesn’t know the right way to express his emotions. Have your child learn to verbalize his feelings so you can acknowledge his emotions. Teach them that it’s ok to feel these things, but we have to choose the way we behave in reaction. Give him safe ways to express his emotions, such as going for a walk outside or another physical activity.

Pack snacks and toys

Another reason your child may get cranky is because she’s hungry! If you’re taking your child with you to run errands, it may take longer than expected so always be sure to have snacks on hand to curb hunger. Small toys can also provide entertainment if your child is accompanying you to the doctor or a store where they will likely get bored.

Talk things through

If you know you are headed to a store where there will be candy which can trigger a tantrum, talk to your child about it before entering the store. Tell her that while she is not allowed to have candy, if she behaves while you are in the store then she can have a healthy treat when you get home.

Go to a quiet place

If your child is throwing a tantrum in public, remove him from the situation and go someplace quiet like the car. Comfort your child with a hug until he can calm down. It may be hard when you’re just as upset, but put yourself in your child’s shoes and try to understand what is causing him to act out. It may just be a change in his routine schedule that he isn’t used to.

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/tips-for-soothing-a-sick-child 2017-03-06T21:00:00-08:00 2020-06-11T08:08:02-07:00 Tips for Soothing a Sick Child Carrie Shan It’s hard as a parent to see your little one suffering when she’s come down with the flu or a cold. You would do anything in your power to take the pain away and soothe your child as best you can. If you’ve already taken your child to the doctor and are giving her medicine to help ease her symptoms, here are a couple of other tricks you can try to make her feel better until her sickness goes away completely.

  1. Keep her in comfy PJs

Have your child put on her coziest, softest pajamas so she can feel super comfy as she lays in bed. Scratchy materials are not going to make her feel any better so something luxurious like Bamboo Footed Pajamas from emeraldsholidays are going to feel wonderful against her skin.

  1. Homemade soup

Nothing can make you feel better than a warm bowl of homemade chicken soup when you’re down with a cold. The homemade aspect makes it taste so good and the warmth of the soup is very soothing. Some studies even suggest that it can help with congestion and has an anti-inflammatory effect.

  1. Lots of fluids

Make sure your child drinks lots of fluids to help thin out the mucus so she can get rid of it easier. If your child has a sore throat and refuses to drink water, try offering her an ice pop which will numb her throat and still keep her hydrated. Babies under 6 months should stick to breast milk and formula.

  1. Hand her a lovey

A favorite toy or lovey might be the first thing your little one reaches for when she is feeling under the weather. These toys provide a sense of security and comfort and will help keep her entertained while she stays in bed all day.

  1. Run a humidifier

Having a humidifier in your child’s room keeps the air in the room moist will will help with your child’s congested nose so she can breathe easier. Just don’t keep the humidity too high and always keep the humidifier clean.

  1. Give her a bath

Giving your child a nice warm bath can be incredibly soothing. It is often associated with a bedtime routine so it can help her fall asleep easier if this is something she is having trouble with. The steam will also help open up her passages to clear her congestion. Then make sure to have some cuddle time after!

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/buying-secondhand-baby-essentials 2017-02-07T21:00:00-08:00 2020-06-15T03:48:31-07:00 Buying secondhand baby essentials Carrie Shan Baby gear can be so expensive these days and you want to buy your baby the best that you can afford, but sometimes accepting hand-me-downs is the most practical way to save money when you have a new baby. If you don’t have any family members or friends with hand-me-downs to give, you can always look into buying secondhand baby gear. The key is to know what items are fine to buy used and which products you should always buy brand new. Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind when buying used baby gear.

YES: Baby clothes

Baby clothes are the perfect items to buy secondhand because baby grows so fast, he’ll probably only wear an item for a month or two before he grows out of it. You can find a ton of great baby clothes that are in perfect condition because they’ve hardly been worn. Just make sure there is nothing coming loose like buttons or zippers that could be hazardous.

NO: Baby cribs

Your baby’s crib is one item you should never buy used. Your baby will be using it every night to sleep and it’s incredibly important to make sure your baby has a safe sleep environment. There have been so many crib recalls and changes to the rules for how cribs must be made so older cribs absolutely should not be used for your baby. Unfortunately, not everyone realizes that these cribs are not safe or they are just unaware of these recalls so they will still sell these cribs at yard sales and thrift stores.

YES: Baby toys

Toys require a bit more research before buying, but for the most part they should be fine to buy used. You can look online for recalls to ensure the toy is safe and also double check that nothing is broken or chipped or has any loose pieces. When you get home sterilize everything before you give it to baby.

NO: Car seats

Car seats are another baby essential that have been recalled countless times and there are always new guidelines coming out for car seat safety. You can do your research before accepting a used car seat to make sure it’s never been recalled but this is one product that is probably just better to buy new.

YES: Cloth diapers

Since cloth diapers are used with reusable inserts, the diaper covers are totally fine to buy used. You just have to buy new inserts and sanitize the cover to get rid of any buildup and you’re good to go!

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/what-is-certified-organic-cotton-and-why-it-s-important-for-your-family 2017-01-26T21:00:00-08:00 2020-06-11T08:07:37-07:00 What Is Certified Organic Cotton and Why It’s Important for Your Family Carrie Shan As consumers, we sometimes take for granted the process that goes into creating many of the everyday items that we have in our households. Whether you are a new parent or you have a house full of little ones, you’ve no doubt taken more of an interest in the safety of everyday household items for children. When measured in hours per day, the product that arguably touches your baby’s tender, developing skin more than any other is her clothes! But clothes don’t contain unsafe chemicals, do they?

Unfortunately, the cotton that makes up a lot of the clothing that Americans wear is treated with insecticides that contain dangerous, and even cancer causing chemicals (all are classified as either category I or II by the EPA, the most dangerous chemicals known). In fact, of all insecticides used globally, anywhere from 16-25% is applied directly to cotton—this is more than any other single crop. The excessive use of chemicals in standard cotton production, as with many other cash crops around the world, has led to a devastating environmental pollution.

From these alarming facts, it isn’t hard to see why we at emeraldsholidays choose to use organic cotton and other eco-friendly and sustainable fabrics for the clothing that comes in such direct contact with your baby’s developing skin.

What is Different About Organic Cotton?

In short, organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic pesticides and insecticides that regular cotton is practically bathed in. It also doesn’t undergo the application of synthetic fertilizers to stimulate the growth process. Instead, organic systems of production are utilized to maintain fertile soil.

Federal regulations also prohibit the use of genetically engineered seeds in organic farming. These strict regulations mean that all cotton sold as organic in the U.S. must meet certain preset standards. This is not only good for the environment, but means that your baby isn’t being exposed to the potentially harmful and allergy-causing effects of cotton that is not certified organic.

Who Controls Organic Production Standards for Fabric?

Third-party certification organizations are tasked with ensuring that organic producers use only methods and materials outlined by federal regulations. Thankfully, some producers of clothing for children commit to only utilizing fabrics in their clothing lines that are certified by these organizations. For example, emeraldsholidays only utilizes organic cotton fiber that meets the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Also, the rayon from bamboo used is Oeko-Tex 100 and Organic Crop Improvement Association International (OCIA) certified.

The use of harmful chemicals in the production of clothing is yet another issue to add to the list of harmful things to keep out of your household, but thankfully there are companies out there taking care to make sure your little ones have only the best materials for their developing and sensitive skin.

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/tips-for-ensuring-baby-s-toys-are-safe 2017-01-09T21:00:00-08:00 2020-06-11T08:06:45-07:00 Tips for Ensuring Baby’s Toys are Safe Carrie Shan Picking out toys for baby’s playroom can be a lot of fun – it’s like being a kid in a toy store all over again! But now you have to actually look at labels and worry about what the toys are made of and if they can possibly pose a hazard to your child. Even when friends and family members offer hand-me-downs and bring birthday gifts, you know they have the best intentions but you still have to be on parent duty and inspect all the toys to make sure they’re safe. Here are some tips for safe toy shopping and inspection.

Lookout for recalls.

It’s very scary, but several baby toys are recalled each year, often because they have parts that can detach and pose choking hazards. There are different online websites you can check to look up recalls like Parents.com or safekids.org.

Make sure there are no loose or broken parts.

If you are receiving a hand-me-down toy, make sure to inspect it thoroughly to see if there is any part that is coming loose that baby can choke on or sharp edges if the toy has been broken. Older toys may also have chipped paint that can be hazardous.

Buy organic.

Although phthalates were banned from children’s toys in 2008, they can still be found in many older plastic toys. Many toys have been found to contain chemicals that may be harmful to baby’s health. Avoid this altogether by buying organic toys so you can feel safe knowing that it’s ok for baby to put the toy in his or her mouth because it is non-toxic.

Avoid toys with cords.

Something parents often overlook is pull-along toys with strings or cords. If the string is longer than 7 inches, it can strangulate your baby. Get rid of it! Even toys with shorter strings can get wrapped tightly around baby’s finger and cut off blood circulation.

Go by age recommendation.

Most kids’ toys have a recommended age on the packaging so you know when is the right time to give it to your child. These are helpful guides to go by, but still listen to your gut and use your judgment with this because you know your baby best.

Always supervise kids when playing.

Parents often trust older kids to lookout for their younger siblings during playtime, but they’re still kids and they need to be supervised. Your older child may not understand that it’s not safe for baby to play with big kid toys because they don’t know that baby can choke on small pieces or get injured another way.

It’s nice to take time off and spend more quality time with your family, especially if it means escaping the cold and vacationing some place warm. The downside of traveling is usually the means of travel – whether by car or plane. The long hours spent sitting still can take a toll on anyone but it’s especially hard on children. Here are some tips you can follow to make holiday traveling easier for kids.

  1. Stay comfy

If you’re going to be traveling for a while in a car or airplane, a key trick is to make sure everyone is comfortable. One of the best ways to keep comfy is to where your favorite articles of clothing like sweats or even PJs! emeraldsholidays apparel is silky soft and made from bamboo rayon and organic cotton so their footed sleepers are perfect for travel.

  1. Pack snacks

No one wants to deal with kids who are cranky from hunger and airplane food is not going to satisfy your picky eaters. Pack your own healthy and nutritious snacks for the road so you won’t have to spend money on overpriced airport food or have to stop every hour while on the road to buy food.

  1. Pick the right date

Traveling during the busy holiday season is not ideal but you can plan wisely by avoiding travel the very day before a holiday. Instead, try to plan your trip a couple of days before the holiday or on the holiday itself.

  1. Choose a good time

You don’t want traveling to disrupt your child’s sleep routine that you worked so hard to perfect. If you’re traveling by car or by plane, make sure to plan the trip to coincide with your child’s naptime or nighttime sleep schedule. It’ll make things easier if your child is able to sleep throughout the trip.

  1. Pack some entertainment

Getting bored during a car or plane trip is inevitable – there’s not much you can do while confined to a small seat. To combat boredom, pack some small toys that are easy to cleanup and lots of markers and drawing paper to keep kids entertained. You can also play some games like I Spy or pointing out license plates from different states. Even putting together a travel playlist of sing-a-long songs can help to pass the time.

  1. Be prepared

Accidents happen when on the road and you’ll want to be prepared for the worst. Pack extra outfits for everyone, extra diapers, extra baby wipes, plastic bags, a blanket, water bottles, first aid kit, etc. Don’t leave this to the last minute – have one bag with all the necessary items packed a week before the trip. It also helps to make a list of things you will need like toothbrushes, shampoo, towels, etc. and check off everything as you pack it so nothing gets forgotten.

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/9-tips-for-your-teething-baby 2016-12-16T16:00:00-08:00 2020-06-15T03:34:01-07:00 9 Tips For Your Teething Baby Carrie Shan Teething is always a rough time for both babies and their parents. Luckily, there are tons of great remedies that will help bring your baby some relief; many of which exist in your very own home. We found some helpful teething pain solutions, including simple foods or kitchen items. Try these tips for your teething baby:

  1. Teething Biscuit

These hard, unsweetened, cracker-like biscuits are great for gnawing on when teeth are making their way through the gums.

  1. Dishtowel

Wrap some ice in a dishtowel and let baby suck on the towel when they are noticeably uncomfortable from their growing teeth. The cold ice will keep swelling down and ease baby's pain and discomfort. Just make sure there’s no ice exposed while doing this, as it can harm your baby’s delicate gums.

  1. Frozen Banana

Leave a banana in the freezer a while to instantly turn it into a natural home teething remedy for your child. This will not only help to soothe the pain for teething, but it’s also a deliciously sweet treat for them to enjoy.

  1. Applesauce

Cold foods like straight-from-the-fridge applesauce taste good and are gum-friendly. While your child clearly won’t be able to teeth with such a soft food, the cold sensation on their gums will definitely help.

  1. Bagel

Refrigerate an ordinary bagel, and it will become your very own homemade teething ring. It's great for babies to gum on while they're getting teeth in and can help ease that teething ache.

  1. Baby Bottle

Another trick for helping baby during teething is to put water in a baby bottle and freeze the bottle upside down (so the water is frozen at the nipple). Give it to the baby when he or she gets fussy, and let them chew on the cold, comforting nipple for a while.

  1. Fruit

You might try giving the baby apple wedges, or for younger babies, apple wedges placed in a washcloth that you hold. There are a handful of delicious fruits that your baby would love to use as a natural teething remedy.

  1. Washcloth

Put a clean, wet washcloth or towel in the refrigerator, and let it get cold. Then give it to Junior, and let him gnaw away on the cloth. This will help ease inflamed gums and will just plain feel good in baby's mouth.

  1. Carrot

Get a carrot -- a full-sized carrot, not miniature "baby" carrots -- out of the fridge, wash it thoroughly or peel it, and let your baby gum it to her heart's content.

You can play with baby any time between diaper changes, feeding, naptime, and more. Little things you do like playing peekaboo or airplane can all contribute to baby’s development. The best part if that baby gets to bond with you and have fun all at the same time! Here are some games you can play with baby to help engage her senses and teach her new skills.

  1. Baby obstacle course

Setting up an obstacle course in your home for baby to crawl and explore through is a great way to boost baby’s development. You can set up different stations around the house with pillows and toys to get baby to crawl over, under, around and follow you through each obstacle. All of these new movements will help baby develop motor skills and coordination.

  1. Read

Parents are encouraged to start reading to baby before he is even out of the womb! It’s never too early to start and you don’t even have to read baby books, you can read anything – baby will just love to hear your voice. Picture books will also help keep baby’s attention and soon enough, he’ll be able to recognizes word sequences from his favorite stories.

  1. Tummy time

Pediatricians recommend that parents practice tummy time with babies every day from when they are born to develop strength and body awareness. When you bring baby home from the hospital you can practice for a few minutes each day by laying baby on your lap tummy down. This position often feels unnatural for babies at first so they may try to fight it but you can distract them with toys or by singing to them until they become more comfortable.

  1. Peekaboo

Who doesn’t love playing peekaboo with a baby? It’s so funny to see them laughing and smiling as you disappear from sight and then reappear. Babies develop object permanence around 9 months old so then they know that mom will reappear even if you can’t see her at the moment.

  1. Texture play

Sensory development is very important and texture plays a large role in baby’s senses. Grab a basket full of different types of clothes like bamboo, wool, cotton, silk, and fleece and take turns rubbing them on baby’s hands, feet, and tummy. You can describe the different textures as baby plays and let her enjoy the softness of the fabric against her cheek. Also let baby play with different textures of food like cereal and fruit so baby can practice fine motor skills and grasping.

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/how-to-sneak-veggies-into-your-kids-meals 2016-10-19T21:00:00-07:00 2020-06-15T03:36:40-07:00 How to Sneak Veggies into your Kids’ Meals Carrie Shan If you have picky eaters in your family, dinner time can be a huge struggle. Once child wants chicken while another child will only eat food that’s in the shape of a dinosaur. The hardest part is usually trying to get your kids to eat a balanced meal with colorful vegetables and fruits. The good news is there are some tricks out there to help you sneak in their daily servings of veggies without your kids ever realizing it. Then maybe after they tell you how much they love it and they want more you can go ahead and share your little secret. They might even be open to trying new veggies after learning they already like some! Here are some tips for sneaking veggies in your family meals:

  1. Give them options

Before trying to sneak in the veggies, be open and encouraging with your kids and give them several different options to try. Put a colorful plate in front of them with some butternut squash, carrot sticks, Brussels sprouts, beets, etc. and ask them to take a small bite of each. If they don’t like it and don’t want to eat more that’s fine, but make sure they try at least one bite.

  1. Add veggies to pasta sauce

If you’re lucky, you can mix veggies in with your child’s pasta and he will love it. If you’re not so lucky, he will find a way to pick out all of the veggies and only eat the pasta. The way around this is to puree the veggies into the sauce so your child will not know it’s in there. And it will still taste yummy!

  1. Make burgers

Most kids love to eat burgers so you can try grating a vegetable like zucchini into the burger patty and your child most likely won’t be able to tell the difference. Instead of regular fries on the side, try making sweet potato fries or add some carrot sticks.

  1. Make veggie pasta

Instead of using regular spaghetti noodles, try making spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles. It’s easy to make by roasting halves of spaghetti squash, scraping out the strands and then toss with your favorite tomato sauce or cheesy sauce or even just eat it alone! Turn zucchini into noodles by slicing it into thin strips and cooking it in a skillet until softened. Then season and toss in sauce!

  1. Make cauliflower rice or mashed potatoes

Cauliflower does not have much of a taste to it on its own, but it makes a healthier alternative to rice or potatoes. You can grate the cauliflower and sauté it to become rice or cook it and mash it together with milk, butter, sour cream and seasoning to make “mashed potatoes.”

  1. Hidden veggie pizza

This is a neat trick that will probably fool little kids but maybe not your older children. Make a homemade pizza by preparing the dough with sauce on top and then layer on veggies like mushrooms and red peppers. Then sprinkle a good amount on cheese on top to make sure those veggies are hidden well. It will look just like a regular pizza!

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/the-benefits-of-snug-fit-sleepwear-for-kids 2016-10-03T21:00:00-07:00 2020-06-11T06:47:50-07:00 The Benefits of Snug-Fit Sleepwear for Kids Carrie Shan When it comes to buying clothing and sleepwear for your kids, there are definitely things you should know before buying that many parents just aren’t aware of. For example, something parents should always try to avoid is purchasing clothing that has been treated with flame-retardant chemicals. There is controversy over this because some parents think this treatment is necessary to keep baby safe. However, studies have shown that these chemicals can cause health problems. Instead, parents are urged to buy snug-fitting sleepwear as a safer option and here is why.

  1. Snug-fitting pajamas are not treated with flame retardants.

Because these pajamas are tight-fitting, they are exempt from flammability requirements. Therefore, no harmful chemical treatments are required for snug-fitting pajamas.

  1. They decrease flammability and the risk of suffocation.

This is because when baby wears pajamas that are oversized or too loose, it increases the air between the clothes and baby’s skin making it easier to catch fire when exposed to a flame.

  1. It stretches for baby’s comfort.

Some parents may look at snug-fitting sleepwear and think it looks way too small to fit baby comfortably. The truth is that snug-fitting sleepwear it made to stretch to conform to baby’s body for optimal comfort.

  1. It decreases the risk of SIDS.

Since snug-fitting clothing does not hang off of baby like loose-fitting clothing does, it decreases the risk of suffocation which in turn decreases the risk of SIDS.

  1. They are made with better fabrics.

Pajamas made of synthetic fabric are required by law to be treated with flame retardants. Snug-fitting sleepwear is usually made with better quality fabrics which are better for baby’s sensitive skin like cotton, wool, or bamboo.

It is recommended that parents look for a yellow label on children’s clothing which indicates that it is 100% cotton and adheres to snug-fit measurements so these products have not been treated with fire-retardant chemicals and are safest for baby. Avoid blue labels which indicate that the product has indeed been treated with flame-retardants.

You should always make sure that the baby clothing you buy is in compliance with the CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act in USA) regulations. emeraldsholidays designed sleepwear is in compliance with the CPSIA regulations and Health Canada Children’s Clothing Requirement.

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/how-to-tell-if-your-baby-has-food-allergies 2016-09-27T21:00:00-07:00 2020-06-11T06:48:45-07:00 How to Tell if your Baby has Food Allergies Carrie Shan Many parents look forward to being able to introduce baby to new foods, but it can also be nerve wracking for some, especially if food allergies tend to run in the family. That’s why it’s important to introduce new foods one at a time to be able to gauge if your baby has a reaction to a specific food. You should wait a few days before introducing another new food just to be on the safe side.

For most people these are the top foods that cause allergic reactions:

  • Milk
  • Egg
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Soy
  • Wheat

With some of these foods, it is suggested to wait until your baby is a little older to try them for the first time.

Typically, allergy symptoms will begin to show quickly after the food is consumed. The reactions can range from very mild to quite severe.

These are the symptoms to be on the lookout for after introducing your baby to a new food:

  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Itchy skin
  • Rash
  • Wheezing
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Face or mouth swelling
  • Loss of consciousness

While we still don’t know why some children have food allergies and others don’t, it is common for children to outgrow their food allergies by age 5.

Bring your child to an allergy specialist if you suspect that your child does have a food allergy. They will be able to diagnose your child, usually through a skin-prick test. Your child may need to avoid certain trigger foods afterwards, or cut the food out of his diet completely. Always make sure to have antihistamine medicine with you wherever you go or an EpiPen if it is prescribed. Lastly, let everyone who takes care of your child know about his food allergies, whether it be a teacher, grandparent, babysitter, friend, etc.

Not only will this allow you the flexibility to choose any type of food that you’d like to feed the little one, but you can also trust the source and production of the food. Also, be sure to grab the organic fruits and vegetables to make these baby entrées as healthy as possible. Here are the best baby foods to make at home:

1. Pureed Carrots

Puree some fresh carrots to make a healthy treat for your baby. Carrots have been shown to improve vision, promote healthier skin, help prevent infection, and can aid in keeping away a bunch of other nasty diseases.

2. Mashed Avocado

Avocado isn’t called a super food for no reason! Mash up some avocado for your child to obtain a ton of potassium, vitamins, and fiber, in addition to various heart-healthy benefits.

3. Pureed Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are not only a delicious snack for baby, but they’re also loaded with great vitamins and minerals! Some of these include vitamins B6, C, and D, iron, magnesium, and potassium!

4. Butternut Squash Puree

Butternut squash is one of the most common varieties of winter squash and is chock full of vitamin A, potassium, and fiber. Due to its tough exterior, you can store this squash for a long time before choosing to make some food for your baby.

5. Mashed Bananas

Bananas are great for homemade baby food because they’re so easy to mash down, and are also very healthy. Bananas are known for the amount of potassium they contain, but they are also loaded with many other vitamins and minerals.

6. Pureed Peas

Peas don’t only make for a colorful puree, but they’re also great for your baby. They provide immune system strength, many antioxidants, and blood sugar regulation effects.

7. Apple Puree

Apples are always a favorite of young children because of their sweet taste. In addition to this, they contain a lot of vitamins and fiber, can decrease the risk of diabetes, and have actually been shown to curb many different types of cancer!

8. Pear Puree

Pears, just like apples, not only taste great for your child, but provide some great benefits as well. Pears will provide the following: fiber, vitamins B2, C, and E, and potassium. Pears also, contain a fair amount of pectin, which is a water-soluble fiber.

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/5-ways-to-create-a-safe-sleep-environment-for-baby 2016-09-19T21:00:00-07:00 2020-06-11T06:45:15-07:00 5 Ways to Create a Safe Sleep Environment for Baby Carrie Shan September is Baby Safety Month so it is a good time for parents to focus on making sure they are doing all they can to keep their babies safe and protected. Knowing that baby is safe and sound will give parents peace of mind, so creating a safe sleep environment for baby should be a number one priority. Here are five of the most important tips on baby sleep safety:

1. Empty Crib

It's important to keep cribs empty of all items such as pillows, blankets, bumper pads and stuffed animals. All of these items pose suffocation hazards to babies. Any loose fabric or soft cushions can unravel and block baby's nose and mouth. Fighting for air or becoming overheated from too many blankets may be linked to SIDS.

2. Safe Swaddling

Traditional swaddling blankets pose the risk of wrapping babies too tightly and reducing necessary movement in the hips causing hip dysplasia. Thick material or too many layers can cause overheating, and strong babies can break out of traditional swaddling blankets which can unravel and cover baby's face.

3. Put Baby on Their Back

Make sure that you always place baby on his/her back when you are putting your little one down for the night or for a daytime nap. This is the best sleep position for babies because babies who are placed to sleep on their stomachs are at a higher risk for SIDS. The reason for this is uncertain but there have been findings that suggest that infants who sleep on their stomachs get less oxygen or re-breathe their own carbon monoxide, or "bad air".

4. Monitor Your Baby

Having a baby monitor in the room with your baby allows parents to keep an eye or ear on their baby from another room. Monitors give you the ability to listen to your baby and check on them without disturbing their sleep. They help you to identify whether or not baby needs your attention and can provide parents with reassurance that baby is sleeping safe and sound.

5. Safe Products

Whether your child is sleeping in a crib, bassinet, or pack-n-play, all safety standards and checks need to complete. It’s important to check product reviews and even research recalls on baby products, as safety is the most important aspect when buying something new for baby. The same precautions should be taken for sleep aids like swaddle suits, sleep sacks, etc.

I’m confident that eventually most of our fabric-based products will incorporate bamboo fibers somehow because of their amazing benefits. Most importantly, bamboo is an excellent material to use for children’s clothing. Here’s why…

1. Bamboo is exceptionally soft – You just can’t find this softness anywhere else. The softness comes from the rounded shape of the bamboo fibers, which means it doesn’t scratch your skin. It’s an excellent fabric for children who can’t tolerate discomfort and people with sensitive skin.

2. Bamboo is anti-bacterial – Bamboo contains a substance called bamboo kun, which protects the plant front fungus and bacteria. The properties of this substance remain even after processing, so the clothing naturally resists bacteria. With less bacteria comes less odor, too, so you can wear the items more often without washing.

3. Bamboo wicks moisture away – Bamboo fabric is better at absorbing moisture than cotton. When you sweat, the fabric pulls water off your body and holds it within the fabric, keeping you dry. This makes it perfect for babies who need to stay dry. It does this through micro-holes in the cross-stitching, which allows heat to escape. Overheating is dangerous for babies, so this is a big benefit.

4. Bamboo uses 1/3 less water – Bamboo doesn’t need as much water to grow as cotton. In most places, that means no irrigation systems are required. In many places, farmer go to great trouble to get the water they need, but bamboo is largely self-sufficient.

5. Bamboo replenishes on its own – Whereas most crops have to be seeded, bamboo sprouts entirely on its own because it will keep growing from the same stalk. It grows tightly compact, too, so a single acre of bamboo creates ten times the fabric as a single acre of cotton. Some bamboo can grow 25 feet in their first month!

6. Bamboo is stronger than cotton – A substance called viscose in bamboo makes it stronger than cotton. Children tend to wear their clothes quickly because of all the movement and play. If they wear bamboo, you’ll keep those clothes for the next kid!

7. Bamboo doesn’t require pesticides – Bamboo has always been grow without pesticides or insecticides. They just aren’t necessary because bamboo naturally resists bugs and pests. Since there’s little to inhibit their growth, bamboo also doesn’t require much for fertilizer aside what’s already in the ground. That makes them a low labor (thus low energy) crop.

Have you ever tried bamboo clothing? What’s your experience?

The fun stuff is necessary to get the full experience of a new child, but keeping safety in mind is the most important aspect. Before your new baby moves in, be sure to rid the home, and especially nursery, of any potential hazards. Here are some tips to keep in mind during this process:

1. Unsafe Crib

Making sure you have the perfect crib is very important because this is where your child will be spending the majority of its time. The crib you choose should meet all current government safety standards. The slats should be a safe distance apart to avoid having your child stick their head between them. Also, the corner posts shouldn’t have any added decorative touches that could snag a child’s clothing.

2. Cords and Wires

Cords and wires are a huge hazard to keep in mind with a child. If they’re not handled ahead of time, your child could reach the cords for the window blinds. This is another huge risk of strangulation. For older babies, they could even climb their way up to the window and fall through the screen. The use of window guards, cordless window shades, and hiding any electrical wires are ideal for baby-proofing your home.

3. Electrical Outlets

Once the cords are hidden, electrical wall outlets should always have plug protectors covering them. You want to look for the covers that can shield the entirety of the wall unit because curious toddlers can pick out the individual socket protectors. Try to even hide the fact that an outlet exists at all to avoid any curiosity from your little one.

4. Accessories

When it comes to a baby’s crib, the only necessary item should be a tight-fitting bed sheet. Many parents love buying a bunch of cute blankets and toys for their little one, but these all pose suffocation hazards for newborn babies. Toys are fine to use when you’re supervising and playing with your baby, but when it comes time for them to sleep, none of these added accessory items should be used in a crib.

5. Dishwasher

The dishwasher is often overlooked, but it poses many safety hazards to a young child. If they’re old enough to open it up, there are sharp utensils, harmful detergent chemicals, and obvious heat danger if it’s turned on. Keep the dishwasher childproof however possible.

6. Purse/Bag

When you get home from a long day, do you sometimes just toss your purse aside somewhere in the house? If so, this is another huge safety hazard for children. If your bag is within reach of the baby, just think about how many little choking hazards can be found inside. Not to mention medication, sharp objects, and any chemicals from beauty products.

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/3-reasons-you-should-choose-natural-clothing 2016-07-11T21:00:00-07:00 2020-06-11T07:47:01-07:00 3 Reasons You Should Choose Natural Clothing Carrie Shan People have been using natural fibers to make clothing for thousands of years. It’s only recently that we’ve added dangerous chemicals to our manufacturing processes and created synthetic materials.

Natural fibers are materials like cotton, bamboo, silk, wool, hemp, cashmere, jute, and linen. Keep in mind, however, that even these materials can be processed in a way that strips their natural benefits.

Labels like “natural” or “eco-friendly” aren’t regulated by the government, so any brand can use them. Look out for the “Oeko-Tex 100” certification so you can be sure the item you want to buy isn’t manufactured with harmful chemicals.

Here are three simple reasons you should switch to natural clothing.

1. Natural fibers contain fewer toxic ingredients than synthetic fibers

Whenever we allow something to touch our bodies, the materials within those items and the materials that were used to make them inevitably end up inside our bloodstream. When we eat something, we use saliva and stomach acids to break down substances, but our skin doesn’t have those protections. That means we have to be absolutely careful with what we allow to touch our skin.

2. Natural clothing is more sustainable

In a world where our energy resources are depleting, it’s important that we all find ways to curb our usage so our reserves last. That means buying products that use less energy in their manufacturing than traditional products.

Natural clothing is considered more sustainable because it requires less energy to make. Manufacturing natural clothing is a traditional industry that depends on sewers and workers, unlike other high-tech, energy-intensive processes. Organic materials also do not use pesticides.

3. Natural clothing breaks down in landfills faster

Natural clothing is made with organic ingredients from plant-based fibers. There’s nothing synthetic about them. They also lack the chemical sprays and coatings that are used on mass-produced clothing.

Without these barriers, organic compounds in the soil have a much easier time breaking them down. When you or your child are finished with your clothing, you can feel comfortable about throwing them in the trash because they won’t sit in the heap as long as other items. It only takes a few years for them to return to the Earth as things should.

Did you make the switch to natural clothing? What was your experience?

https://emeraldsholidays.com/blogs/blog/14-ingredients-to-avoid-in-your-baby-products 2016-07-04T21:00:00-07:00 2020-06-11T06:50:31-07:00 14 Ingredients to Avoid in Your Baby Products Carrie Shan Babies are especially delicate and they are more prone to irritations, rashes, and other effects of chemicals in our everyday products. It’s important to make sure we aren’t putting damaging substances in or on our babies’ bodies. Here’s a list of ingredients you should avoid in baby products:

1. Parabens – Parabens is a group of preservative chemicals used in cosmetics and food. It prevents the growth of organic compounds in products. These are known hormone disruptors that lead to reproductive problems and breast cancer. Babies need their hormone levels left alone so they can develop properly. Check the ingredients list on a product for anything that ends with “-paraben.”

2. Coloring – Synthetic colors are made with petrochemicals and heavy metals. They can cause irritation with any tissue they touch. Babies don’t care what color their lotion or shampoo is.

3. BPA (Bisphenol A) – This is a chemical that hardens plastics. It’s linked to early puberty and disrupted hormone levels. These days, most children’s products are made without BPA, it’s found in the lining of food packages, cans and plastic home goods.

4. Phthalates – Phthalates are used to soften plastics to make them flexible. It’s also linked to hormone disruption and development problems in children. It’s been banned for use in most children’s products, but it’s still used in products children contact (like raincoats, shower curtains, backpacks, pool toys, soaps, lotions, and perfumes.

5. Flame retardants – Found in plush products, furniture, pillows, mattresses and carpeting, flame retardants are not bonded to the material they cover, so they are easy to ingest with simple contact. They cause reproductive damage and affecting motor and learning skills.

6. Pesticides – You know these aren’t healthy, but you might think “why would these ever touch my baby?” Pesticides used in your lawn can leach into the ground water and your well, which feeds into your home for drinking and bathing. Small children and babies have an increased exposure to pesticides because they drink more water in relation to their weight than adults.

7. Lead – Found in the paint of older homes, lead stunts growth, damages the kidney and liver, and causes delayed development in children. It can also affect the nervous system. It’s banned for use in paint now, but if your home was built in the 70s or earlier, you should test the paint.

8. Talc – This is a drying agent added to foot powders and baby powder. It’s a mineral that’s dangerous to the lungs if inhaled. Honestly there’s no reason to use baby powder; moist skin is healthy!

9. Propylene glycol – Designed to open up your pores to allow other ingredients inside, propylene glycol is a carcinogen that’s easily absorbed in the skin. It blocks your skins ability to repel other dangerous chemicals.

10. Triclosan – If something is antibacterial, it likely uses triclosan. This is a carcinogenic endocrine disrupter that destroys bacteria that’s usually pretty safe. In fact, raising a baby in a perfectly sterile environment robs their immune system of natural resistances and immunities.

11. Fragrance – This is a scary category because it can include pretty much anything. The fragrance labels allows manufactures to hide ingredients for proprietary reasons. Some products have hundreds of chemicals hidden in “fragrance.” If a product adds a scent or flavor to a product, they shouldn’t be ashamed to tell you what they used to make it.

12. Phthalates – Phthalates are “xeno-estrogens,” meaning they make the body think there’s enough estrogen and not to make any more, but they don’t fulfill estrogen’s role, so your body is lacking. This is very dangerous for babies and children who need their hormones for proper development.

13. Formaldehyde – This is a preservative added to liquid products to prevent mold. It’s a human carcinogen that causes respiratory problems, nausea and headaches.

14. 1,4-dioxane – This is a chemical byproduct, meaning it won’t be on product labels. It’s made in the reaction of other chemicals (as if you didn’t think you had enough to worry about). 1,4-dioxane is a possible carcinogen that’s linked to organ toxicity and allergies. Avoid it by avoiding products with sodium laureth sulfate and PEG compounds.

If you avoid these ingredients, you and your family will live safer lives. Here at emeraldsholidays ® we use safe and healthy materials when creating our eco baby and toddler clothing with these unique features:
